Exposure - November 2006

This newsletter starts with the very sad news that Bob Elliott FRPS, EFIAP, APAGB passed away on the afternoon of October 10. Bob was the secreatry to the Southern Photographic Federation for a while.

He will be greatly missed by the Federation. He was always there, with his expertise and tremendous knowledge, giving of his time unselfishy to all things photographic.
Our thoughts are with his wife Audrey and his daughter.

Next some great news.... we have a new treasurer for the Southern Federation... Mr Roy Lambeth CPAGB BPE 1, a member of the Viewfinders Camera Club.... has stepped forward and kindly offerred his services, which the council have welcomed and promised him all the support he needs ....... perhaps this is a time I think to remind all members, that the council is made up of your peers from other clubs ... they put in a fair number of hours throughout the year on your behalf, arranging competitions and exhibitions. All these you know about, but we do need more representatives from the clubs. About half appear at the representative meetings held four times a year in Winchester and it is at these meetings that decisions are made and taken for the federation. We really do need more representatives from clubs, so if your club wants to know whats happening then send one of your members to voice your ideas or concerns. I hope to make this one of my main topics as President. So find out a little more about the other clubs and join us at the next representatives meeting.

My own club Highcliffe & Infinity are enjoying their new meeting place, complete with the purchase of a large screen and a new print display board. There is also a bar for those in need of medical assistance. We look forward to a year of successes. Our first member to receive the Federation Roll of Honour is, Louis Rumis ARPS APAGB a well known natural history photographer and raconteur, someone who gives his all for the furtherance of the art, and always available to give help, not only at our club but at his other club Southampton CC. We are delighted to know that his name has been added to that Roll of Honour.
Is there anyone in your own club who you think deserves to be added?????

What is your Club doing this season? We would like to include any important feature that you are intending to hold in the “Exposure” newsletter. Get in touch please. The more we know, the more others will.
Lastly I ask the Club, secretary’s to put on your notice board the website address of the SPF, we get a lot of “hits” but that is the place to look at for all club members to see who is who and what is what and it also has a lot of information which will perhaps, help to widen your thoughts, I know our webmaster is very happy to hear from you.

Ian Bigg,LRPS CPAGB.
President Southern Photographic Federation..

Editors Notes

Here we are again, just a little earlier than usual due to the fact that the December Quarterly meeting has had to be brought forward to November.

I trust that everyone is fully revived after the hot summer that we have had and of course the Indian Summer in September/October. With a little bit of luck there will be many images taken by Club Photographers everywhere, not just for Club competitions, but Federation run and International as well as our own online one (not very many entries this time, unless there has been a late rush after writing this at the end of September) see the page at http://www.southphotographicfed.org.uk/asp_pages/comp_online_comp_200601.asp More images will be very welcome.

It was recently brought to my attention that some secretaries were not happy about having their telephone numbers displayed on the website, consequently if there is an email address for contact I have removed the telephone number as really, only an email address is neccessary. If you do want your telephone number displayed, please email me and I will replace it.

The website has had a recent revamp and may also get more before it works the way that we want it to. A suggestion is that we have a members only area, where the first time that you try to visit the area you will be asked for your email address and a password to gain access. In this area would be things which are pertinant to the Federation Club members, not others. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Happy Snapping Trevor

Any errors should be notified to or by post to 123 Aylen Road, Copnor, Portsmouth, Hants. PO3 5HE.

Any copy for the Newsletter should be sent to Trevor by January 12th.

PLEASE BRING THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF ALL YOUR CLUB MEMBERS

At a recent Council Meeting it was decided that from September 2006 for all SPF Competitions/Exhibitions print measurements will be shown metrically.
i.e. 40 x 50cm.
As this is fractionally smaller that 16 x 20 inches, it was decided to advise all clubs now, so that any print worker can mount to this size, if they don’t already, in anticipation of their work being used by their club next season for these events.

There will be on exceptions to this rule at all.

Judges from the Handbook

I have written to our “newly qualified” judges inviting them to the Valley Park on 2nd November and it looks as if most will come. Feel free if any of you wish to attend. The more there to contribute the better.
Some have pointed out that, although their details were printed in the May Exposure they missed the Handbook and they have not seen any bookings since. With your permission I am going to ask Trevor to run their details again in the next edition, which will be out a little after our meeting, and include the copy below which I hope Trevor will pick up

Judges - What Judges?
One of the most frequently asked question of Council is when are we going to have some new judges? Well we supplied you with a new influx following our April Assessment day and their details were published in the May edition of Exposure (y’know that newsletter which Trevor struggles to produce four times a year but rarely seems to reach your average club member)
Now the boots on the other foot. Judges - when are you going to use them?
It seems very few of you are prepared to invite a new judge to your club, preferring to rely on the good old faithfuls who turn up at your club year on year and make the same dreary comments. Well, if you do not use the new names I can well understand if they withdraw their services.
Just in case May exposure arrived with you just as you were closing down for Summer we repeat below details of the new kids on the block. They are all champing at the bit to visit you and assess your work. Please, please use them.
Just a reminder. Preliminary judges can only be used for internal club competitions. Panel B for internal and inter club events (ex League battles).
I hope, but this time next year, I get complaints from the “not so new” judges that they cannot cope with all the bookings.

The new judges are:-

OBITUARY

Bob Elliott FRPS EFAIP

I first met Bob Elliott when working at the Ordnance Survey some 30 years ago. He was in charge of an Office with seventeen draughtsmen and women. Eventually I took over this position as we were both promoted at the same time. Bob went up the scale to the job in charge of Surveyors in South East Region of England. However Bob had proved his ability to run an office with newly trained young draughtsmen and older workers who had more experience and who had advanced to become examiners of maps. This was a challenge of an unusual mix of people.

Bob at that time was an active member of the Ordnance Survey Photographic Society and became their Chairman for four years in the 1980 period. Bob found a healthy rivalry with himself, John Philpott and Leigh Preston helping him hone his Photographic outlook and set him on his way to greater achievements in this marvellous medium.

Bob had joined Kingston Camera Club on his secondment from the Ordnance Survey. On his return to Southampton he joined Southampton Camera Club as he felt that he needed a stimulating programme to give him that extra ‘push ‘ to extend his creativity.
During this period he had perfected Colour Slide sequences and then onto Monochrome Prints and in the Digital age Colour Prints. He gained his Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1984 and then added the Fellowship soon afterwards, later on was asked to be a member of the RPS Visual Arts Distinction Panel. Bob Elliott also became a member of the Southern Federation Council in 1984.

Bob became President of Southampton Camera Club in its Centenary year of 1996. This was followed by a very successful year under his tutorship.

Bob will be sadly missed for his brilliant Lectures and his judgments of other people’s work which left the worker with a feeling of achievement even in the most humble image. His summing up at International level was recognised throughout the Photographic Society of Great Britain.

Jim Mansfield ARPS

Who is the President.??????

I thought it would be an idea to let members of the SPF know who I am????? a lot do I feel, but there might be the odd dozen or so who dont, and our newsletter editor likes to fill his Mag.

My wife, and 2 children although they are both in their middle 40s now, having flown the nest some years ago and I suppose it was in 1960 when we moved from Petersfield to Wimborne and later was invited to join the Camera Club, I was involved with Round Table in those days, (who wasn’t) by one of the tablers and thought, yes, OK give it a go.

A Practica 35m was my first camera and since then i’ve progressed through many Canons, Nikons back to Canons. A couple of years went by when the idea of running a weekend Photography course at Avon Tyrell, deep in the heart of the New Forest became a reality and it took off as the first Teach-In. We had people from many parts of the country in response to a write up in the Amateur Photographer. The Editor was going to be one of the speakers, so that helped. A success - yes - and we embarked on another 6 months later. In about 1968 I think Audio-Visual was being born. The main interest there, was in France at Epinal, where they held an annual competition. Not to be beaten by the ‘le french’, we decided to hold a Coloursound weekend, again at Avon Tyrell, which by the way, was and still is a Youth Club Association manor house of the upmarket variety. Most bedrooms were of the multi bed type, not popular by todays photographers but then it didnt seem to matter. Names like Sir George Pollock, Richard Tucker, Micheal Tickner, Helios Grp from Bristol, Ray Beaumont-Cragg (France), Sam Haskins. Coloursound was born, we then progressed to Coloursound 72 the 1st International AV convention to be held in the UK. The names read like the cast in a mammoth West End production. As well as the above names, Lady Doreen Pollock, Edwin Appleton, Roger Lane. John Podmore, Bryan Snowball and Bryan Angus, Tony Troman, David Burns, Tony Hill. Roger Holman, Gordon Malthouse & Monsieur Thouvenot from Epinal. Adding to the above names was the late Mrs Pat Whitehouse who brought the house down with her wonderfully remembered sequence of fledglings in their nests, beaks wide open awaiting food when instead of the usual accompaniment of background music and commentary, the soundtrack burst out with Handels Hallelujah chorus, the sight of those gaping mouths apparently pouring out the majestic sounds was not only amusing but very moving as well. “The organisers did well to put that on as the last sequence of the weekend”, said George Hughes, then editor of the AP, who gave the organiser lots of credit. George was one of the judges!

Unfortunately Avon Tyrell became too small for our Coloursound weekends and we moved across the borders to South Wales and joined Richard Tucker an established Nikon Lecturer and AV buff at Dyffryn House, a beautiful manor with extensive gardens. Coloursound carried on every 6 months here for several years until the cuts came and South Glamorgan had to close the house for economic reasons. Where have we heard that before! With a lot of scouting around I discovered the Wiltshire CC adult education residence at Urchfont and they grabbed us with open arms as they were hoping to increase their own intake again for economics, and happily to this day AV in a slightly different form - did I hear the word Digital - is held every April and October at Urchfont Manor, still under the tutorship of Richard Tucker FRPS, enjoying good food and involvement with digital AV.

For myself I gave up the 6 monthly conventions, after I believe to be nearly 30 years of organising and assisting the running of AV and previously Photo Teach- ins - great fun, hard work but very mentally rewarding, met dozens of like minded people, from all over, not only this country but from our friends over the water.

What is he doing now you may ask? Well frequent judging around the region. As I live on the western edge of the Fed I get invited to visit many Western Counties Clubs as well, about 30 in a season I think in total. Currently, Chairman of Highcliffe & Infinity CC which is a great club, as well as President of the SPF and if I serve my 2 years then I think it will be an involvement in Photography for nigh on 45 years ..... and in the words of the prophet, I might sit back and enjoy being just a member of a wonderful community .... Photography .... the place to meet friends ..... the hobby ..... and the life!!!!!!!!

Ian Bigg LRPS CPAGB.
President Southern Photographic Federation

Summary of Council meetings September and October.

President thanked all those members who had been involved in helping Anne to hang the PAGB exhibition and subsequently reported that it had been a very successful exhibition with many visitors. Special thanks were given to Peter and Sheila Read for the stewarding of the exhibition.
Good news – Roy Lambeth has volunteered to take on the role of Treasurer and at the October meeting Council voted to co-opt Roy onto Council to take over the role immediately. Jon Mitchell has now handed over all necessary paperwork.
The PAGB Awards event will be held in the SPF area in 2009, Crossfield Hall will be booked for this.

Exhibition – 39 panels of prints and 32 panels of slides now received. Council discussed the possibility of having the large and small gallery to show the exhibition. This is being investigated. The selection will take place on 26th November 2006.
Still looking for one or two people to take on the organisation of this for next year.

League competition – entries should all be in now, Council discussed late entries and upheld the rule that entries must be received by 6th with any amendments received by 16th October. As at 5th October only 50% of clubs had sent entries in.

SPF Slide Championship 4th February 2007 – no entry form necessary, just email Ernie Fulbrook with entry. This event will be held at Basingstoke, NEWDIG’s new venue; Viables Craft Centre. Entrance fee £5, club reps free. Council have been active in having some of the SPF events in the north of the county.

PAGB exhibition there were 17 federation acceptances including 1 silver medal for Laurie Phillips. The standard of work was high and even impressed Peter Riley the curator at the library. Anne thanked Geoff Kelland for working out the hanging scheme as it saved a lot of time on the day.
Again there is a need for someone to come forward to organise the SPF entry for this event. In the absence of any volunteer, Leo kindly rushed off an entry for the Slide Championship.

Handbook now delivered to all clubs, Dave accepts there are errors in this and taking details from clubs. This coming year will be a full review of the handbook including all the judges.
Due to spiralling costs Council agreed that clubs not attending the Club Reps meeting to collect their handbooks would have to pay postage.

Dave Kessell is seeking sponsorship from local businesses in Salisbury.

Website has now been upgraded and new pages will be added as necessary. The on line competition has not been very successfully supported with only 12 entries at 5th October. Bryan Powell will be asked to judge this again. Please support this event. Trevor is looking at some changes for next year, whereby people will be able to comment on each picture on line.

Roll of honour continues to be a success with several in the pipeline. Keep the nominations coming in.
A follow up evening for newly assessed judges is being held on the 2nd November at Valley Park Community Centre.

The 2007 Inter club Digital Competition will be hosted by Newbury Camera Club at Shaw Social Club.

TO ALL PRINT WORKERS.
It has been decided to change all measurements for both prints and slides to metric from next September for ALL SPF competitions, so print workers may find it easier to mount work to a max. of 50 x 40 now since your work could be chosen by your club later for use in a SPF competition.

Audio Visual Assessments

The Audio Visual assessments are only held once every two years. Now that there are simple computer programmes making the production of AV’s so much easier there is a growing demand for distinctions in this category. There is also a section for Stereo Submissions. There are three levels of award, Credit, Distinction and Master as per the non AV awards.

The next assessments are being held on Saturday 10th March, 2007 at St Mary’s bay Village Hall, Jefferstone Lane, St. Mary’s Bay, Kent TN29 0XH and are being organised by the Kent County Photographic Association on behalf of the PAGB.
The Closing Date for entries is the 31st January, 2007.
