Presidents' Message

During the past six months we have welcomed two new clubs into our Federation – Boscombe CC and recently Lordshill CC.

Our second Inter Club Print Championship held in February, according to the three judges compared very favourably with other similar competitions where they had judged for other Federations. We had a small hiccup towards the end of the day when the computer broke down, but with manual scoring in place as a backup, we were able to continue. Southampton CC were the winners, closely followed by Ordnance Survey PS, so both clubs will represent the Federation at the PAGB event at Connahs Quay. Our thanks to Ian Bigg and his club, Highcliffe and Infinity CC for organising the day.

The Judging Workshop held on 19th March was very successful. It was a pleasure to see so many new faces eagerly waiting to be initiated into the secrets of judging. After Leo’s opening remarks, David Barton gave a presentation using a digital projector, outlining various technical aspects and how to judge the ‘rather odd’ peculiarities of the projected image that sometimes occur. Useful to all of us !!
Many potential judges enjoyed the round table discussions in preparation for their assessment. These will hopefully bring several new judges onto our ‘B’ list, which will help to maintain the numbers on our judging lists.
Sighs of relief and colour came back into a few cheeks at the end of the day. The venue proved to be ideal for the purpose. Thanks to Leo, David and the other established judges who assisted. One more plea:- If you want to attend such an event please don’t leave it to the last moment to let us know, as it was on the point of being cancelled once again.

The semi-finals went off OK, but not without incident. With all the marks for prints and slides flying around, the unlikely event of a tie occurring happened in the first semi final – not once but in both prints and slides. This means we will have three clubs in both sections on Finals Day. Thank you to Southampton CC and Newbury CC for hosting.

Two more Roll of Honour presentations have been made. I had great pleasure in presenting Dick White of Fareham & Portchester CC with his framed certificate. The other presentation was to Ron Knowles of Wimborne CC. Both recipients have, and are still performing sterling service to their clubs. Such people hold together the whole structure of club existence.

The redesigned Web-site is emerging, with many improvements having been made, and more pages in the process of being added. Many thanks to Trevor.

Jack Whitemore.

Editors Notes

Here we are again, another Federation year is at an end. How will the Federation pan out in the hunt for new blood for the Council? Is there any new blood? If there hasn’t been any take up of the positions left vacant on the Council, could this be the last Federation Newsletter? As usual, there has been the same old cry for volunteers for the posts met with the same old apathy from the Clubs!!! In the event that the Federation is still running, could the Club Secretaries try and recruit members for any positions that may crop up next year.

The re-designed Southern Federation Website is now up and running and can be found at the usual address of http:www.southphotographicfed.org.uk
Peter Read has been keeping the website up-to-date for many years and has made a good job of it for the Federation.

The Council last year, had asked for a revamp of the site and asked Trevor Muston if he could help in designing an easier to navigate website. It was easier to design the site by one person, but make it updateable by many, if needed. It was with that in mind, that it now appears in the way that it does. Though, this may change in the future.

To get to this change was a major struggle in itself as the original ideas for navigation failed to work, meaning that Trevor had to go back to the drawing board, not once, but several times. This was due in the main to the type of hosting that we have at present.

As you will see, some of the old pages have not found their way back yet, though this is being rectified, little by little. Newer items will appear as quickly as possible, with some items appearing within a few minutes of me receiving them. The best place to look for new items will be the Latest News section, this will start afresh each month, but the previous months links will appear in the Archives.

I hope that you will encourage your members to use the site, as well as sending information for use on the website. Of course it goes without saying that not only should you send items for the website to Trevor, but also for the Newsletter as well, as Trevor is doing both jobs, unless someone wants to take one off him!!!

Any errors should be notified to or by post to 123 Aylen Road, Copnor, Portsmouth, Hants. PO3 5HE.

Any copy for the Newsletter should be sent to Trevor by August 12th.

With a little bit of luck, the weather should soon be changing for the better and we can all get out and take those wonderful images for use later on in the year.

Happy Snapping Trevor

PLEASE BRING THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF ALL YOUR CLUB MEMBERS

At a recent Council Meeting it was decided that from September 2006 for all SPF Competitions/Exhibitions print measurements will be shown metrically.
i.e. 40 x 50cm.
As this is fractionally smaller that 16 x 20 inches, it was decided to advise all clubs now, so that any print worker can mount to this size, if they don’t already, in anticipation of their work being used by their club next season for these events.
This change will also be publicised at the Febraury Quarterly meeting and in the February issue of Exposure.
WILL YOU ALSO PLEASE REMIND YOUR SPF DELEGATES THAT THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON FEBRUARY 15TH and NOT a week earlier as published in the Newsletters.

GEMS.P.S.

ARE WE or AREN’T WE

Due to circumstances that have occurred within the Sports & Social Club, of which the final outcome will not be known until June, means that there is a great possibility that it will cease.

Should this happen then the GEMS Photographic Society will no longer be able to meet at the present venue and a name change once again.

As we have known about this possibility for some time we have already sought out an alternative venue should we have to vacate. It is situated not far from our present venue and well sign posted.

As for a name change, this has not yet been decided upon, as we will no longer be supported officially by the company in many of our International commitments.
Due to the time scale we have everything in place for a smooth change over. The 2006/7 programme is almost completed and will be suitable for either of our venues.

Those Clubs with whom we will have immediate contact with in respect of League Matches and Friendlies etc., have been informed about the possible name change and will be informed as soon as we know.

Ernie Fullbrook will still be the Secretary so all correspondence will still go to his home address.

We are still holding on to our 3rd place within our Group in the P.S.A. International Electronic Imaging Competition with just one more round to go. The total scores for the top 4 places are very close and it will be a very never racking to see how we fare in the end. The top 3 are awarded Medals Gold, Silver, & Bronze. We just have to hope that our May entry will do the trick.

On the 17th November 2006 we host one of these rounds. As it will not take up a full evening and it is a 3 Judge event, we have decided to host an informal Inter Federation Digital Projection Challenge. We have invited 2 clubs from each of Western, Chiltern, Surrey to participate all have agreed willingly, and have reserves just in case so much interest in this. We have not yet invited any from our own Federation so should any club be interested in submitting 10 images please let me know.
Even if we don’t move we will be using the alternative venue, as it is much larger and more parking off road.

Our Individual Digital Projection Challenge will once again be hosted on the 19th January 2007 and sponsorship has been once again promised. This event has now become very popular with a record entry last time and if we had included those late entries we would have nearly doubled the entry. Due to the number of entries we did send the Judge a Disk of all entries to view prior to judging. Do we go along this route again or do we go the whole hog and have 3 Judges just scoring on the 2 to 5 scale, yet to be decided?

To help our newer members and also ANYBODY ELSE interested our, Tristram Reed is presenting an evening on the 22nd September 2006.
This will go through the ways in which to prepare Digital Images for Competitions, and Exhibitions as he has had to help many with their entries to our various comps and has also been called upon by other clubs outside our federation for help in this and other related problems. He will also be showing how to prepare images for the making into slides. This is fast becoming the way to enter slide competitions rather than the conventional way.

Although we have had quite a few invitations to participate in Digital Projection Competitions etc., which we have accepted in the forthcoming season, none are from within our own Federation. We are willing to consider any and to give guidance where necessary. We have found that 70 Images plus or minus 10 to be ideal and an individual club entry of between 10 and 15.

Yours In Anticipation.
Ernie.
GEMS.P.S. or Whatever.

WINCHESTER ANNUAL EXHIBITION 2006

The 73rd Annual Exhibition of Winchester Photographic Society opened on 22nd April and runs to 9th May at The Guildhall Gallery, Winchester. The Gallery opens 10.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Saturday and 12 midday to 5.00 pm on Sundays.

This prestigious exhibition was judged by Peter Rees, FRPS, EFIAP, MPAGB from Shrewsbury. From a record entry of some 1,300 pieces of work, he chose winners in both Members and Open Classes, commenting on the very high quality of the pictures in all mediums. Around 250 prints and 230 slides arebeing shown in the Gallery.

Further information is available on line at http://www.winphotosoc.co.uk or from the Exhibition Co-ordinator, Carol Watson Tel: 01962 883613 or Publicity Officer, Anne Ruffell on Tel: 01962 884543.

THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT…………….
proved extremely successful as far as the Federation is concerned, even though numbers attending were far lower than we had expected. This is an issue that has to be addressed. Putting on a day like this involves a great number of judges in giving their time, freely, to help others who wish to learn about judging or to undergo an assessment. The Federation Council know it will be a loss maker but, if it produces new judges, it is worth the price. We cannot, however, expect judges to make themselves available if the numbers attending are so low. Many people clamoured for a workshop then didn’t support it, which is a shame as they missed a very encouraging day and I am grateful to David Barton, Brian Powell and Jack Whitemore who acted as assessors and everyone else who contributed, either by supplying equipment, or work (including digital!) to be used either in the presentations or the round table discussions. Also a big “thank you” to all those brave souls who put themselves forward for an assessment.

We have various changes to the judging panels as detailed below. Council welcomes all our new judges, each of whom has undertaken an appraisal, and feel sure they will make a very positive contribution. Now that they have committed themselves to helping bolster our Panels please make use of them. Not only with this provide them with useful and practical experience, but will give a few of our hard pressed existing judges, a little more free time.

Please remember that Preliminary judges may only be engaged to judge internal club competitions and not inter-club events. Panel B judges can officiate at Inter Club competitions.

ERRORS / ADMENDMENTS /ADDITIONS 2005/6.

Southampton Camera Club Secretary

TO ALL PRINT WORKERS.
It has been decided to change all measurements for both prints and slides to metric from next September for ALL SPF competitions, so print workers may find it easier to mount work to a max. of 50 x 40 now since your work could be chosen by your club later for use in a SPF competition.

A CLANGER AT GEMS.

I have made very few errors to the Programme for GEMS and it’s other names during the past 34 years. This season I dropped a real clanger which in turn turned out for the good of a few.

The evening in question was for the 24th March this should have been a Multi Club & International 3 Judge event. Due to my well-organised office, the invitations failed to get posted, and were only found when I had a computer problem and they were found on the floor at the back of the desk. This was far too late then to post off. I managed politely to cancel 2 of the 3 Judges, keeping the 3rd for what I had in mind.

Knowing that there was a possibility of the Federation holding a Club Digital Projection Championship, and also knowing that many of the club who have Digital Projection, only used them for in house competitions. So I invited 5 clubs, of which all but one I knew had not participated in such an evening. Some I must say agreed reluctantly whilst others jumped at the chance. We did have one club out of the Federation to help them participate with their own.

Each club submitted 12 images in the PNG format to our Digital Projection Competition Secretary (Tristram Reed) and to the specification asked for. We have followed the rules used by many of those with whom we compete with in this discipline, as it seems to work very well.

The Judge for the evening was Glyn Edmunds ARPS. He used the 0-20 scale for marking as this is what the programme we use prefers, although this time we partly ignored it but the score did show up at the top right of the screen.

There was quite a selection of images we had seen previously as either prints or slides, although there was some very good creative work.

Due to us not using the Programme to fully score, each club used the old fashion way of a pre-printed score sheet.
When it came to the end it is the first time I have known all scores to come up with a different total.

After much to-ing a fro-ing they at last agreed.
Bracknell CC:- 210 ; Farnborough CC:- 208 ; Whitchurch Hill CC:- 200
GEMS PS:- 199 ; Viewfinders of Romsey:- 198 ; Horndean CC:- 198
A small-engraved Trophy was presented to Bracknell commemorating the evening.

All those present thanked us for hosting such an evening, and in the light of the Federation hosting a Club Digital Projection Championship it has given them food for thought. Even those who were at first reluctant agreed that it was a worthwhile exercise.

Ernie.
