We are enjoying the Heatwave as I write this President’s Piece, even too hot to take pictures do I hear. “It will melt my card.......dissolve my film......never mind I have some stunning images for next seasons battles already taken and printed up....” a likely story in reality!!!! BUT the Southern Federation has had some excellent results during the summer recess.

We came 2nd in the PAGB print competition colour section, 10th in the monochrome. At Warwick University, our entry from Spectrum won the plate competition. For those of you who don’t know the importance of that, it is the best of the 23 remaining clubs after the first 10 were chosen to compete for the trophy. So may I offer my congratulations to those clubs who submitted and were chosen to represent the Southern Federation.

My congratulations also go to 2 members of the Federation for achieving a credit and a distinction with the PAGB awards. Messrs, Glen Irving and Tim Withall, also to Chris Wainwright FRPS, for having his print selected for the 28th bi-annual EFIAP print competition being held in China. And last but not least, well done to Ian Platt for achieving the EFIAP Gold award this year. I know many others have received awards in various competitions and exhibitions and I am justly proud as President, that our Federation has achieved these awards..... however do not rest upon your laurels, next year we can do even better I know...... which brings me onto the subject of a new Federation Rep for the PAGB competitions.

Our own Anne Mahany LRPS is giving up her post very soon and after many years of badgering and persuading club members to part with their prints and slides, burning the midnight candles to meet the deadlines, she feels rightly so, that there is a new face to take this very rewarding post on. Please don’t just read and think oh yes! Pick up the phone or e-mail our secretary offering your services.

One last plea from the presidential palace - the new treasurer seems to be still missing??? It isn’t an onerous task - ‘so im told’. If you have any skills in looking after money and small accounts then you are most welcome to join us, your Federation NEEDS you.

President, Southern Photographic Federation

Editors Notes

Phwoar!!! Hasn’t it been hot in recent weeks. Makes a change from all that wet stuff. For the first time in years we actually took our summer holidays at home this year and were pleased with the weather that we had. We travelled to the Dales, York and Edinburgh for two weeks and I am sure that I have come back darker than the times that we have travelled abroad for the sun.

The evenings are now drawing in, ever faster so it seems, or is it just that I am getting older. Gone is the first flush of youth, the reckless things that you wouldn’t think twice over, after all, we are all invincible - aren’t we?

Anyway, with the evenings getting darker earlier, the changes of light happen sooner in the evening or later in the morning, meaning we will have to adjust our body clocks to get those stunning pictures ready for the coming seasons competitions.

With the success of this years PAGB competition we should be spurred on to do better this year. Get to an exhibition or competition and see what the opposition have to offer, you might be surprised! Not every image is unbeatable and yours might just be the one to do it.

On the website, is this years online competition which quite frankly is looking silly. There are just three images there. Is anyone interested in taking part in this exercise? I believe there is a small trophy for the winner this time.

I am looking to find a way for Club Members to vote for their favourite images, thereby letting the members choose the eventual winners. If I can get it to work this time I will, though I suspect that it will have to wait until next year for that. I am also investigating a ‘Members only’ area, where you will have to enter your details including a login and password, to allow you to things like the Handbook etc. This will hopefully prove to be a winner for the federation as it will save the fedeartion a lot of postage - the Handbooks are very expensive to post. And those clubs that do not send a representative to the Quarterly meetings are costing us a great deal of money. So the Federation has to find ways to save money and this seems a logical way to do it.

Can you think of anything else for the members only area? If so, let the webmaster know.
Any errors should be notified to or by post to 123 Aylen Road, Copnor, Portsmouth, Hants. PO3 5HE.

Any copy for the Newsletter should be sent to Trevor by October 12th.

Happy Snapping Trevor

PLEASE BRING THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF ALL YOUR CLUB MEMBERS

At a recent Council Meeting it was decided that from September 2006 for all SPF Competitions/Exhibitions print measurements will be shown metrically.
i.e. 40 x 50cm.
As this is fractionally smaller that 16 x 20 inches, it was decided to advise all clubs now, so that any print worker can mount to this size, if they don’t already, in anticipation of their work being used by their club next season for these events.

There will be on exceptions to this rule at all.

A World of Colour

Colours of Nature is a compilation of images of wildlife and vistas from around the world, illustrating the contribution of colour to nature’s many treasures.
The author, Ray Richards was born in Hampshire and currently lives in Petersfield. Recently retired after 40 years with the MOD, he spent his formative years in Malta, where he developed his love for photography. His interests include nature, aviation and sporting action, and having travelled extensively, this is reflected in his book.
With a range of subjects, from wildlife to landscapes, from exotic to local, it is all here. Illustrating nature’s use of colour in everything around us, this book is an inspiration to photographers everywhere.
Ray has included images from Africa, Australia, the Far East, the Americas and Europe, including several around Hampshire. So there is no reason why this book shouldn’t inspire you to go out locally looking for similar images.
Ray is not a professional photographer although he regularly gets his work published, achieving some prestigious awards.
Colours of Nature is published by Serendipity – ISBN: 1-84394-156-2 – and is priced at £29.95

PAGB INTER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2006
A small contingent of ‘regulars’ made their annual pilgrimage to Warwick University
early one Saturday morning in the middle of July to support our three local clubs who would be competing. Southampton Camera Club were there as one of the four highest scoring clubs from the previous year’s Championship, together with Chichester CC and Spectrum
as winners and runners-up from our own Finals Day in April.
The judges this year were three ladies - Irene Froy, Margaret Salisbury and Margaret
Hodge, so before the event started we wondered how would they mark?? As the slides were being projected it became obvious that they were marking much higher than last year’s judges, so what would the scores be at the end of round one?
No surprises - overall totals were much higher. At the end of round one, Wigan 10 (last year’s runaway winners) were tying with Cambridge at this stage with 105 points. Our three clubs were some way behind. After the scores from rounds one and two were totalled, because three clubs had scored 195 - the cut off point - 10 clubs went through to the Finals, leaving
23 to fight it out for the Plate Competition,
including our three local clubs.
Selections were made after this, the forms and slides delivered backstage for sorting and then everyone was able to go out into the grounds to enjoy their lunch in the sunshine.
Back into the lecture theatre with its air conditioning and steeply banked seating for the afternoon’s sessions, the lights went out and judging of the Plate Competition
was under way. Scores were read out in programme order, although the slides are projected in a random sequence.
Most were in the 90’s - it came to Spectrum’s total - 99 - the highest so far, but still nine more scores to be given out. We held our breath for what seemed an age and a half - at last, the final score came - 95 - so Spectrum had won the Plate Competition. Well done Spectrum !!
Then it was lights out again for the Finals.
Scores were given after 10 slides from each club had been projected - at this stage Wigan were second to Amersham
- would they be beaten?? No they were not. They pulled it out of the bag again winning by a margin of eight - not so wide a gap as last year when it was nineteen.
At the end of the afternoon, Leo Rich received
the Don Morrison Plate on behalf of his club together with a PAGB Bronze Medal.
For any photographer who has not been to Warwick University for the PAGB Slide Championship, you do not know what you are missing. On the day, you have the opportunity to see over 600 of the best images from clubs all over the UK, from a comfortable seat with an uninterrupted
view of the screen in a large 500 seater air conditioned auditorium. Cost - £5 for the whole day. Where else could you get such value for money??

OBITUARY

Recently we heard of the sad demise of one of our great Photographers.. Sam Haskins... somewhat controversial in style back in the 1970s.
Who? I hear you say... Oh yes, I remember. That’s the fellow who did the Pentax calender, with all those girls, the apple, the landscape and symbolism even more of his trademark, perhaps, than the apple..... The faintly visible girl with a plate camera showing (apparently) her ribs clearly shown with his apple suspended therein.... go back to the 60s, when his then, innovatory black & white photography appeared.
Then to the 70s when his colour work was described as arguably the best colour montages in the world......why am I going on about the 60s & 70s? Have none of you caught the plot,!!!!!!! the word of course is Manipulation of images.
He said when people compare the art of painting with the craft of photography, I can acheive an effect in painting in half an hour which might take a whole week in photography, because I would have to build the set. Yes, today we have Photoshop....to do our manipulations......and when these clever clogs show you their heavily over manipulated images with that smirk on their face. ask them if they have heard of Sam Haskins.
The conceiver of the multi-image in the 60s who with his wife Alida, came from South Africa and even then she said that she hoped he would be remembered as one of the worlds great photographers and she as one of the happiest photographers widows .... and he was ... not only for his clever manipualtive work. Who said its all been done before!!!!!!! Of course it has, but he composed the image firstly in the camera and used those images to perfection, in my book, and I was lucky to have met him and his wife several times.

LAST RIGHTS OF GEMS. P.S.
As many of you will know GEMS. P.S. were the only British participating Club in the Photographic Society of America International Club Digital Projection Championship. This was over 4 Rounds of 6 Images each Round and an Author could submit only one image per Round. Up until the final Round we were running 3rd and expected to finish in that position although all positions were being challenged, as scores were very close. Each Round was judged at a different venue by 3 Judges on the 2 to 5 Scale. Ribbons being awarded for the Best of the Round (15), and the 14, & 13 scores.
The Judging for the Final Round was to take place on the 10th May 2006. And hosted by the San Francisco C.C. Results were eagerly awaited to see if we had retained our 3rd place. Much to our surprise we had leap fogged over the 1st & 2nd placed clubs, and were the Winners by just one point. We also had another first as being the only club to have all 6 entries receive an award including Best of the Round.
The GEMS. P.S. Final Meeting and also the last at the GEMS Sports & Social Club House was on the 19th May. Besides the normal end of season-programmed format we were able to have the Ribbons Presented to all of the 6 Authors (they arrived just in time that morning). The Presentation was done by Mr Steve Lawrenson. ARPS, APAGB, who is the Handbook Secretary of the Surrey Photographic Association.
It was a fitting end to go out on such a high for a Club that had many name changes since joining the Federation as Bell & Howell C.C. nearly 40 years ago. We did know of the possibility of the Sports & Social Club folding at the beginning of the year. It was not until April that we new for certain that the S & S.C was to cease at the end of June. With this early knowledge we had made contingency plans for another venue and also a Programme to be suitable for both the venues should the closure not take place.
It was without warning that LINK CAMERAS & VIDEO our local Independent Camera Shop and Sponsor to many of our Open & Free Competitions, and also the donator of the LINK GOBLET to the Federation went into Voluntary Liquidation. We are pleased to inform you that I to EYE our other sponsor has agreed to take on those commitments for this season.
Footnote.
There were initially 39 clubs although 7 dropped out along the way and from 6 different countries. This was the 1st year of this championship organised by the electronic Imaging Section of the P.S.A. Due to it’s success and possibly more clubs participating in the 2006/7 season it will be split into Groups to make it more manageable for the hosting clubs. We will be hosting one of these rounds under our new name on the 17th November 2006 All are welcome to attend and it’s FREE.

THE BIRTH OF NEWDIG
With the closing down of the GEMS Sports & Social Club. It was decided that a new name was required along with a new venue. As we would no longer be part of or supported by the Company.
The acronym “NEWDIG” is derived from North East Wessex Digital Imaging Group, although we are primarily a Basingstoke Group we did not want to impeach on the other local club name in any way. It also reflects the change in Photography from Film to mainly Digital.
As for the venue I was asked at a Council Meeting if there was a venue to hold Federation events in the North of the Region. In seeking out I came upon the Hall at the Viables Craft Centre. George Walsh and I viewed it and it met with our approval. Little did I then realise that a month or so later I would be making enquiries about the possibility of us making this our new venue. Seeing we were very well know to the Glass Engraver who has a workshop on the site and my being in the know we were able to get a very reduced hire fee. The hall is very much larger than the previous although lacking in the bar facilities. The other added advantage being that we have off road parking. It is very close to our previous venue and many pass it by when visiting. It is also very well Sign Posted from the 3 Main Roundabouts.
Our Programme for the coming season is biased towards Digital, although the traditional will still have some evenings. We have been asked to host one of the Photographic Society of America Electronic Imaging Divisions International Club Digital Projection Rounds. This will be held on Friday the 17th November. Due to it being a 3 Judge 2 to 5 scale scoring it would not fill an evening. It was decided to seek 2 clubs from our neighbouring 3 Regions plus 2 from the Southern for an informal INTER REGIONAL CHALLENGE. The invited clubs accepted the challenge without hesitation, infact I had clubs outside of ours asking if they could be reserves so much was the interest once the word got out. I have also heard that certain Regions are taking an interest so great things may come out of this event in the future. The invited Clubs being: -
Kingswood CC - Swindon PS (2nd & 3rd in Regions DP Comp).
Buckingham PS - Marlow CC (Both highly placed in Regions DP Comp).
Kingston CC - Woking PS (Both clubs highly respected for their images).
Southampton CC - Viewfinders of Romsey CC (Representing us).
All are most welcome to come along for this FREE evening and supporting our 2 clubs. From images that have been seen from the previous P.S.A. Competition and some of those from our invited clubs it should be a very rewarding evening, Ribbon along with a Trophy donated by our Sponsor I to Eye who we are indebted to.
Due to the increasing numbers entering our OPEN INDIVIDUAL CHALLENGE, we have decided to go for the 3 Judge 2 to 5 scale Judging rather than one Judge struggling to cope with the number of images presented. The date being FRIDAY 19th January 2007. This will once again be a FREE ENTRY thanks to our Sponsor, I to EYE.
The 3 Judges will be all members from the WOKING.P.S. Full details will be published on our WEB site (www.newdig.org) plus the EXPOSURE. It will be a chance to try out your images prior to your clubs selection for the Federations inaugural Club Digital Projection Championship to be held on Sunday the 25th March 2007.
NEWDIG are also pleased to announce that they will be hosting the S.P.F. Slide Championship on the 4th February at 2.p.m. Location of Restaurants and the like will be sent to participating Clubs and on request to those others who wish to attend.

WEBSITE WARNING
It was pointed out to us that our Web name in the Google Search Engine had been infiltrated by a Porn Site. It was also found that other search engines had similar attachments to our name.
Although our Web Master had taken the normal precautions when setting up it seems that it was not good enough. Due to his work and contacts with certain Search Engine Staff he was able to find out the root cause. Although the application of a filter both by us and the Search Engine provider has eliminated the majority it seems that the ingenuity of some have found a way around this.
These Porn and similar Sites trawl or have trawled for them to find vulnerable sites to attach themselves to. It seems that camera club sites are at the moment a prime target due to the amateurish set up operation and update, leaving themselves wide open.
He was also informed that the more sophisticated operators are able to place a link to their site via yours.
A random check was made to a few sites and it seems that we are not the only ones so get your Webmaster to check regularly. It seems that the Shabby Rain Coat Image has been once again exploited and bringing our hobby into disrepute by some.

TO ALL PRINT WORKERS.
It has been decided to change all measurements for both prints and slides to metric from next September for ALL SPF competitions, so print workers may find it easier to mount work to a max. of 50 x 40 now since your work could be chosen by your club later for use in a SPF competition.

THE DIGITAL PROJECTION CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
As some of you will know I was appointed by the Council to organise the inaugural event at the beginning of the year. Due to mine and my wife’s health at the time it was almost certain that I would have to hand over the position of Handbook Secretary. This new job would not have such pressures place upon me and would be able to evolve over a period of months. Plus the fact that at that time I had the most contacts of Clubs and Federations doing or had done a D.P. Championship or similar. GEMS.P.S. at that time had experience of hosting or participating in similar competitions over a number of years
The first stumbling block was to find a date, which did not clash with other events and yet gave time to fully explore all the requirements needed to host such an event.
The date decided upon and agreed by Council was Sunday the 25th March 2007.
As this was to be hosted by a club in the north of the region a 2.00.p.m. start was agreed upon with an estimated finishing time of 7.45 p.m.
As for Judges we required 3 and this was one of the easy tasks. Rod Whellans. M.P.A.G.B, A.P.A.G.B, A.R.P.S, and President of the P.A.G.B. wished to visit the Federation during his time in office. It was thought that this would be a very good opportunity for him to see what we as a Federation were able to provide for our clubs, and at the same time meet representatives of various clubs. Our second invited Judge was Mrs Betty Billingham. A person very few of you I expect will know. She is the Editor of the Electronic Imaging Divisions News Letter for the P.S.A. although she lives in Gloucestershire England. Betty has Judged many International D.P. Exhibitions and is a prolific entrant gaining many awards.
Her image in the recent Western Counties D.P. Championship was awarded 2nd place and her club also came 2nd in their Championship. The third invited Judge
is Mr Roger Maile he is the Editor and co owner of “DIGITAL PHOTO ART”. His magazine hosts a number of Digital Competitions on a regular bases and he has judged a majority of those entries so he is well aware of what to expect. Roger prior to going into business was a very active Camera Club member and Exhibition entrant. So we have been able to assemble 3 Judges of varied experience and diversity.
I along with Tristram Reed (seconded by Council as Technical Advisor) have visited a number of the other Regions officials who have been involved with the running of theirs or similar. In so doing we have been able to learn first hand how they hosted theirs and the problems encountered. I have also been in contact with others further afield to get their views and details of their hostings, and programming of the event.
The other Regions which have hosted a similar event have had 60% of their clubs enter. For us that would be in the region of 40 clubs when I done a survey last year there were 58 clubs (80%) who had access to a digital projector so can we get close to that number. The number of images submitted by a club remained constant at 25 with no limit as to subject matter, and I proposed to follow this. Another universal rule was that an entrant could only support one club and that the maximum entry was 5 images. Those regions that have both a Print and a separate Slide Championship in the same season do not allow similar images digitally converted to be used. I have included a rule that only those from the Slide Championship
( 5th February 2007) be excluded. As for the sending in of entries all have been universal that they are sent in on a CD-R with the relevant information written on the Disk in marker pen along with the entrance fee of £10.00. This is in fact the lowest fee for any such D.P. Championship. All without fail have said that although full instructions were given as to how their entries were to be formulated and sent in many did not do so. This is one reason for the proposed long lead time so that corrections can be made. The other reason being the compiling of all the entries in sequence, as you cannot change an image over like you do in Slides should a mistake occur.
Please support this event, the excuse of that other clubs are better than us will not wash as very few have ever competed against one another so standards are unknown. Other regions have had some quite unexpected winners with the so called top clubs coming way down the list.
Rules, Timetable, and Restaurants will be sent out in due course to ALL CLUBS.
Ernie. Fullbrook. BEM,APAGB.
