President's Piece September already, which of course means that we are all back at our weekly Club meetings and looking forward to the new seasons programmes – competitions - league battles - lectures and workshops. The latter has gained popularity in my own club Highcliffe & Infinity CC. We propose to run a workshop once every four weeks. More and more members are looking towards digital enhancements and the questions on how and why are constantly arising, so with a few members willing to share their own expertise we have embarked on that route, especially since we are now the proud owners of a digital projector and software etc thanks to the ‘Awards for All grant’. The next problem is how to use it ????? Insurance is another big question for Clubs now with expensive equipment, gone are the days when dear old Fred Brown looked after the projector at his home, it was worth about £160.00 and if it got lost or stolen???? - well not too much of a loss, but now when we are talking about £3000.00 plus, our House Insurance will cough at that for sure - so look into the Insurance carefully that your club has and see if it is enough. Who says nothing is new in Photography???? In the past few years, we have heard a lot about Reportage type photography. During the summer recess I went to the Isle of Wight and visited the Dimbola Lodge, the home for a few years, of Julia Margaret Cameron, remembered by a niece for wearing stained clothes and smelling of chemicals, was amongst the most enthusiastic of 19th century photographers producing striking pictures. Her subjects had to hold poses for as long as seven minutes on occasions. None of your 125th at F8 in those days. Yet she created striking pictures which by today’s standards would be classed as Reportage. One which strikes me was taken in 1864 - Mother with 2 children - a picture which projects, love, hope and perhaps some charity?? 143 years ago when this was taken, and even by today’s standards it would be a worthy inclusion into many a Club competition, infact this along with 90 odd other pictures of hers were auctioned in 1974 for $121,000.00. I know very many of you have visited Dimbola Lodge, and for those who haven’t, then take time out and visit, you will be amazed at the style and work put in to her craft all those years ago. No compact flash cards, or even film base in those days. I feel that our friends??, health and safety would love to get their hands involved and create a ban on some of the chemicals used then. Safety helmets, goggles, rubber gloves and clothes, rubber aprons. And that’s before you enter the darkroom!!!! What halcyon days they were! To end my ramblings, you will see further in this copy of the newsletter, Diary dates for you to remember, another Digital championship at Newbury again in March /April to be confirmed, and yes Chichester Camera Club have agreed to host the Print Championship. We are very grateful to these two Clubs for coming forward. You will also see a vacancy advertised, and with over 2000 members of clubs in the Southern Fed, there must be at least one who will apply for this vacancy????. I rest my case. Ian Bigg CPAGB. LRPS |

Editors Notes Another lovely summer is almost
over and I am sure that we all look good with that
golden glow covering our bodies! For some time now there has been a call for a shorter email address and web domain for the Southern Fed. Well, that is about to happen. Almost everyone refers to the Federation as the Southernfed, so that is what the new domain will be. In future, the website will be http://www.southernfed.org.uk and email ends with southernfed.org.uk The pages will also change over time as I am trying to set the pages in another format making it easier to navigate, but of course this all takes time. Please bear with me. As many of you have already seen
the ‘Online Photo’ competition has now
closed but was well supported this year. My thanks
go to all who took part and I hope that you will take
part again next year. Congratulations to the winners
and of course to the Judge for his selections. Another Digital Competition Manager has emerged as well as a programme for running the Club (see page 8). I wonder if there are any more!!! Don’t forget that the next Rep’s meeting is in November, See you there. Trevor |

PAGB AWARDS FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC MERIT - ADVISORY DAY This Federation is running the April 2008 adjudication (26th/27th April) on behalf of the PAGB and this will be the last time it will be in this area for some while. If past experience is anything to go by the largest number of entries are received from the organizing Federation and, judging by the interest already being expressed, club photographers in the South will be maintaining that tradition. So, to cater for the anticipated demand we have arranged to hold a PAGB Awards Advisory Day. Date: Sunday 4th November, 2007.
Doors open 9.30am for 10am start. Finish around 4pm.
Admission by ticket only. We are delighted to have obtained the services of Andy Hanson ARPS, MPAGB, APAGB. Andy is currently the President of the East Anglian Federation and will be making a presentation about the awards using his wife’s Credit panel and his own Distinction and Master Panels as illustrations. If you bear in mind that less than 100 MPAGB’s have been granted since the scheme began you will appreciate he has been there, done it and got the badge and certificate (if not the T shirt). Andy has also agreed to stay on, in the afternoon, and join a couple of PAGB ranked judges who have sat on the adjudication panels to give advice to prospective applicants. The Cost: Applicants who wish to bring work
must be aware that this will be displayed in order
that all attending can obtain benefit from any advice
that is given. Time does not permit giving private,
individual, guidance. To: Leo Rich DPAGB, ARPS, EFIAP, APAGB 81, Hilltop Way, Castle Hill, Salisbury, SP1 3QQ. PAGB AWARDS ADVISORY DAY Name …………………………….. *Notes: |

Three Photo Club Members Honoured Winchester Photographic Society is pleased to announce that David Taylor RPS has been made a life member with immediate effect, for “outstanding service to the Society”. This award recognises David’s unselfish dedication to the Society over a number of years. A member since 1988 he took office as Treasurer just a year later, a position he held until two years ago. As if this wasn’t enough, he created the Society’s website five years ago and has maintained it ever since. David’s contribution to photography extends beyond Winchester’s boundaries. For nineteen years he was Southern Regional Treasurer of the Royal Photographic Society and is an Associate member of that organisation. He also maintains their website. David was recently added to the Southern Photographic Federation roll of Honour for “exceptional service to clubs and the Federation, for at least ten years”. Dr. MIKE ASKEW FRCS ARPS It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Michael (Mike) Askew, FRCS, ARPS. Mike died at Gosport War Memorial Hospital on Monday 6th. August, as a result of a long-standing illness which he had faced stoically. Having served as a Medical Officer in the Royal Navy, Mike became well-known as a local doctor in the area of Alverstoke, but his quiet, friendly and helpful nature also brought him to prominence within the wider medical world, where his typical charm and efficiency were valuable qualities as a chairman and organiser of conferences and study groups. However, throughout his whole career, he also maintained a passionate love of photography and consistently produced work of the highest quality. I first met Mike at Southampton Camera Club, and was delighted when I became President in 2002 that he was elected Vice President. I highly valued his wider understanding and perspectives on the photographic world, always found his advice well-balanced and sound. He was a man one could work with very easily, and in running the club, we soon established a good relationship and friendship. When Mike became President he brought a delightfully dry sense of humour, a wealth of experience and many good initiatives. Like so many, I was devastated to learn of his illness, but admired him immensely for the openness and courage with which he dealt with it. Mike was always prepared to encourage new photographers or offer advice, always happy to share his experience and skills. He stuck most loyally to film and darkroom work despite having won a free copy of PhotoShop. However, he did later embrace the digital era, and succeeded in this too. Mike travelled widely in pursuit of Photography, often with Charlie Waite, with whom he was great friends, to locations as varied as Cuba, China, Venice and Namibia. It was while he was on his way to Cuba that an Iraqi diplomat became ill. It was Mike who answered the call “Is there a doctor on board”, then was credited with saving the patient’s life. Mike was a member of the Royal Photographic Society, Southampton and Gosport Camera Clubs. He loved to produce high quality prints covering a range of subjects. He held many exhibitions of his work, including for his local fine arts society.
Our sympathies go to his wife Jackie, who understood and supported his dedicated interest in photography over many years, and to all members of his closely-knit family. Mike will be sorely missed by his family, many friends, ex-colleagues and the wider photographic community. David Kessel, BA, LRPS,
member of SCC, The RPS & The SPF Council |

Letters
to the Editor I was interested to see in the May edition of Exposure that in your “Editor’s Notes” column you evaluated PicShowE, one of a number of software solutions available to clubs looking for a method of managing digital image competitions. Having read your conclusion that this was a “system to consider” at a really competitive price, I was then surprised to find a further page of the Newsletter given over to the marketing of this software, presumably written by Maurice Hammon, the software developer. While I can have no objection to your providing a review of the software, I do find it a little unfair of the Newsletter to favour one piece of software in the way it was done, when, as I have already said, there are a number of other software solutions out there. One could certainly gain the impression that the SPF has given PicShowE its blessing as the Federation’s officially-preferred software - indeed I have heard members of another club state that this is the case. Our Club Secretary has asked the question of a Council Member and received confirmation that the SPF does not have a stated preferred choice of software, but it would be good to have this clarified in the Newsletter. Having publicised one such software program, it would seem only fair for the SPF (Newsletter Editor) to evaluate and publicise others so that clubs have a better idea of the range of software available on the market. One such is a program called Digital Competition Presenter (DCP) which was developed by Hien Quan, a member of my own club, Farnborough CC. DCP has all the functionality necessary to run club and inter-club competitions in the same way as print and slide competitions are run, and it has been robustly tested in competitions at Farnborough for the past 3 years. Hien has recently decided to make his software available to other camera clubs at no cost, and it can be downloaded from his site by accessing this webpage: http://somefotos.com/dcp where you can read the list of features it contains and also download the user guide. I would finally add that when specifying the system functionality, we insisted that the program should be user-friendly and we believe that Hien has succeeded in providing this. I hope you will have a chance to look at DCP (see below) and would be most grateful if you could print this email in the next Newsletter. Terry Redman, Chairman, Farnborough Camera Club Editor: At the risk of opening
the floodgates, it was never my intention to endorse
any particular product, just to hopefully get some
interaction on the subject or even any other subject.
If a member of your club has come up with something
they think is of use to other clubs in the federation,
I will be only too happy to include something. It
helps me to fill a page. |

| Digital Competition
Presenter by Hein Quan “Effortlessly Manage Your Digital Projection Competitions” The Digital Competition Presenter was designed with the collaborative efforts and knowledge of members of Farnborough Camera Club. The main objectives of the application are: * Ease of use - easy to setup,
operate and extract information. Digital Competition Presenter Feature List * Specifically designed for Camera
& Photography Clubs - based on existing processes,
as used to manage competitions in traditional formats,
with preview, marking and display of best/winning
images. Need more information? Ready to start managing your own
Digital Projection Competitions? Editor’s Road Test: There are many talented members in our clubs, so I am sure that there will be other programmes around, it is just a case of them letting you know about them - be they free or a nominal charge, links could be placed on the website to bring them to the attention of other Clubs. Maurice Hammon (May Newsletter)
also has a programme which he has built which may
be of interest for those running the Clubs. It will
list the members, contact details, membership payments
paid/due etc. |

Southern Photographic Federation - Council email addresses Over recent weeks I have noticed
that many emails to Council members have been wrongly
addressed. The current addresses have been in force
for over a year now, but some of you must still have
old ones in your address book. President - Ian Bigg - president Anything else will be delivered to the SPF server and will get picked up eventually and possibly forwarded to the right person, but if you address it correctly to start with, there will be no delay. Thanking you in advance for your assistance in trying to improve communication between Council and Clubs. There are still a few Clubs who do not have an email contact, if your Club has not informed us of a contact and you have one, it would be appreciated to enable the Council to contact you in that way, thereby saving postage. Webmaster. |

Web Statistics During the past three months we have averaged over 16000 hits on the website with over 250 Mb of downloads, pages etc per month during that period. Most visitors come to the site between the hours of 10am and 11pm. Though another surprise is that we also got hits betwen 1am and 5am, must be insomniacs! As you would expect, the majority of the hits came from the UK with a 100 from the USA. There were also some Saudi Arabia, France, South Korea, Ukraine, Poland, Australia, China and several other places - worldwide fame. One interesting batch of visitors came from Israel. The most used page is the index page but after that comes the Latest News, League Results, Exposure Index, Member Clubs The majority of entry pages are
from bookmarks or direct entry other links from search
engines are mostly from Google with a few from MSN
and Yahoo. I hope to include more staistics in the next issue, so get your members using the site even more to increase the site numbers. |
