President's Piece

October has nearly gone and the clocks have gone back... your elected Council has just passed through possibly the busiest time of serving the Federation... We have been hosting the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. (PAGB) inter federation Slide Exhibition..... involving many hours of work and worry by a few members of the Council. We had to receive the entries from all other Federations around the country - these had to be checked against the entry forms and it was unbelievable how many Federations didnt bother to identify themselves!!!

How were we supposed to find out where Alfie Butt - Bird in Flight, came from and which club? Let alone Federation????? Some slides having 3 spots - did they want to have 3 tries at seeing what it is??? A few slides having 7, yes 7 numbers on the mount, as well as the entry showing a totally different name as the one put on the form.

This was before we started, Our saviour was a guy from North Wales who sent Lynn Lambeth the format he used three years ago. Why do we have to reinvent the wheel each year? I asked, when this Exhibition has been going for several years. No answer was the stern reply! David Kessel did a magnificient job getting the advertising done for the catalogue and Liz Whitemore asked if she could help and I dont think she will ever say that again as I invited her to DO the catalogue. She and of course, Jack spent countless hours and many phone calls to find out and copy and re-read and create the final result, which most of you I’m sure will see.
One whole day, spent randomising the total entries, for the three Judges to make their selection. Then another full day, when we had to layout the equipment needed and were only allowed to have a minimal attendance in the hall when the Judges deliberated and made their choices.
At the end of that day we breathed a sigh of relief, but of course much of the work had yet to be completed. The accepted slides had to be sent away to be copied for showing to all Federations around the country including Ireland and Scotland and of course Wales. Certificate’s printed for the accepted authors, medals to be engraved, slides to be resorted back into the Federations and sent back to them - much packing.

Here then the final task, to send out the catalogues some 1200 in total to again the Feds and the PAGB execs.

Why do you need to know all this you may well ask, a very good question we say, all the work undertaken by the Council is carried out in our own time - unpaid - because we all feel that the Southern Federation is worth it - and those good burghers on the council need help from you. We cannot survive without new members coming onto the scene and giving of their time and expertise.

Luckily we will not have to host another Exhibition for many years to come and this one is the last of the Slide ones, In the future, Projected Digital Images will be the content used, BUT all the usual work has to go one, arranging and organising our annual Exhibition, the League Battles, Semi and Finals, In fact every facet of the Southern Feds existance relies on the community spirit of a few faithful servants. I have asked before, but now your Federation needs YOU, there have been those who have criticised perhaps some of the things we have not done, they are the ones who we need to put things right. Don’t wait for someone to ask you to help ..... just murmur the word, ‘Yes’, in one of the council members ear and you could find yourself on a journey that will give you a lot of pleasure and fun as well as helping the Southern Fed, so a phone call is all that is needed by you and many thanks for your time in reading this.

Editors Notes

Here we are racing towards another years end.

The clocks have given us an extra hour of daylight in the mornings , giving us the opportunity to still get out and get those crisp, misty shots - the one’s that could potentially be competition winners. You may be one of those photographers who prefer the other end of the day and will be able to get those evening photographs, especially with the fireworks over the past few days.

Has you club got any events organised for the coming season? Something special, that you want to broaden out to other clubs? Send the details to Exposure and we can include it in the next issue. Just remember to send it at least a month before the next issue is due out. Exposure is printed in February, May, September and November.

I would like to re-iterate, the sentiments of the President in his message on the front page - we need more members for the Council. The present Council are not getting any younger, although Club life does seem to be attracting some younger members, now that digital is becoming more popular. Make sure that some of the younger members see this and give them some encouragement to take part.

As you can see, this edition of Exposure is a lot smaller than normal, firstly because I had a problem with my computer and had to re-install the software (fortunately all my files are on another external drive), but I still needed the programmes to access them and secondly there has been little information from the Clubs coming in. So please, help me to fill the next issue which will come out in February.

On behalf of the Council, may I wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas and fantastic New Year.

See you again in 2008

Trevor

THE GREAT BRITISH CUP

This is a brand new competition, proposed and being organised by Rod Wheelans of the Scottish Photographic Federation on behalf of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. This is the first venture of the PAGB into Digital Competition and is a trial run pending the introduction of digital images into most, if not all, of their events.

The Competition will have two sections enabling both large and small clubs to participate.
The Main Great British Cup
Clubs are to enter 20 digital images on a CD (NOT email). No one author to have more than three in the total and a minimum of eight authors work has to be used.

The Great British Cup for Smaller Clubs
Clubs are to enter 20 digital images (CD only) with no one author having more than four in the total entry and a minimum of five authors work has to be used

A smaller club is not defined by its total membership but their inability to make up a satisfactory entry involving at least ten club members. Each club must decide which section they wish to enter but cannot enter both.

Subject matter entirely open.
No photographer can represent more than one club.
Each club will have to ensure that each author has the sole copyright of the image(s) they have submitted.

An entry fee of £10 per club.

No catalogue issued but each club will receive a CD compiled from the entries in both categories. Additional copies can be purchased either by the Club or non participants, for £10.00. The latter could be useful for clubs just going digital, to see the standard of work already being accepted into competitions.
The PAGB will reserve the right to use the work for its own publicity purposes and possible inclusion in a lecture for the Recorded Lecture Service.

A three judge system will be used and the competition will be run under the current digital competition rules of the Scottish Photographic Federation. (see their website www.scottish-photographic-federation.org for details of file size, format and colour space) The judging of the first event will not be open to the public.
Further details including address to send entries should be on the PAGB Website by the middle of October.

CLOSING DATE IS THE 2ND FEBRUARY 2008

PAGB Inter-Club Print Championship
27th October 2007

The Sports Hall of Deeside College, Connah’s Quay saw the gathering of photographers from all over the country to battle for the title of Print Champion club.

Each Federation can send 2 clubs to represent them, plus the top 4 clubs from last year so in all 30 clubs took part.
The top 2 clubs in our league competitions for 2007, which were Southampton Camera Club, and Chichester Camera Club were chosen to represent our Federation, and were duly there with their teams of supporters.

All clubs took part in the first round and the prints displayed on an easel, which was photographed and projected on a large screen so everyone had a good view.

The 3 judges Tom Dodd FRPS, Alan Milward MPAGB, Hon PAGB, FRPS, and Bob Moore Hon FRPS, Hon PAGB, DPAGB pressed their buttons and marked each print.

When the totals were totted up the leading 9 clubs took part in the finals for the championships, and the rest battled for the plate.

We were thrilled that Chichester gained a tie with the 8th place and so gained a place in the final.

This was excellent that Chichester as a new club to the Championships should get a place. Southampton had been chosen to go for the last 3 years, and so were not able to use any prints from previous challenges, and were a little handicapped. They tried for the Plate in the second round.
We saw some wonderful photography and enjoyed it very much and when the results were announced we agreed that Amersam PS were very worthy winners with Smethwick PS in second place.

We were thrilled that Southampton CC won the Plate and I shall enjoy it being shown to the club. Their marks were well ahead of their rivals so it was very satisfying.

Individual awards were made and Hugh Milsom won the trophy for the Best Print and our John Sergeant of Chichester CC won the silver medal awarded by Tom Dodd.

So altogether it was a splendid day and I thought the Southern region displayed their work very creditably and I’m sure their supporters went home happy.

ePhotozine Website

A website that I have found for lots of information is called ‘ePhotozine’ and can be found at www.ephotozine.com

It is chock full of hints and tips for the photographer. Something that may be of use is the test images that are downloadable as high-resolution images, one of which is a Colour chart - this is the GretagMacbeth ColorChecker chart and we use it to assess how well colours are rendered and particularly the combinations of colours. Note that all web browsers will render this image as sRGB, whereas the chart itself contains colours that are only reproduceable in AdobeRGB.

Not only are you able to download these images, you can also view other images for ideas, you can join a forum and communicate with other photographers. There are also review sections - ideal if you are considering new equipment or changing from film to digital.

Another popular and useful section, especially for the novice, is the technique section.

If you know of any other sites that are useful let me know and we can let others know.

Anything else will be delivered to the SPF server and will get picked up eventually and possibly forwarded to the right person, but if you address it correctly to start with, there will be no delay.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance in trying to improve communication between Council and Clubs. There are still a few Clubs who do not have an email contact, if your Club has not informed us of a contact and you have one, it would be appreciated to enable the Council to contact you in that way, thereby saving postage.
